BirdogForge is located in s. Armstrong County, Pennsylvania, about 45miles northeast of Pittsburgh. We are in a rural area where knives and firearms are still a way of life.

I produce knives using both forging  and stock removal methods. Both have their good points and I try to incorporate them into my products.

Tomahawks I produce are generally ballpeen hammers, though I do some wrap-around type hawks.

I prefer working with O1 tool steel and  sawblades (which I get spectrographed). The sawblades are generally 1080+2% nickel.

Forged steels are 5160, W2, 10xx series steels  and some 52100.

I make my own cable damascus and  pattern welded billets for blades. The steel for those billets is generally bandsawblade, 10xx series and O1.

I really enjoy using native wood for handle material, maple. oak, sassafrass and wild cherry are some of my favorites. Also antler , bone and micarta.

I've been interested in knives since I was a young boy. I remember Dad giving me pocketknives and of course I promptly lost them. Being the young heathens we were, my 2 brothers and I spent most of our waking hours running the ridges, hillsides and streams of Westmoreland County Pa. And always carrying our hunting knives.

Entering the auto-repair trade after high school, I was unbending metal for a living. I would make a knife now and then, and very crude specimens they were.

After a serious auto accident in 1999 I needed a rehabilitation type activity and bought a Grizzly grinder. I was off and running, so  to speak. Being self-taught is a long hard way to go. Once I connected to the Internet, things began progressing much faster.

I've spent the last 8 yrs building, acquiring, and designing a shop and facilities in which I can build attractive and serviceable edged tools.

Mission Statement

I desire to build the best possible knife , each and every time .

Bruce & Di

One of the few times we both stop at the same time in the same place

Living in the country for the past 21 years  has given us the freedom to walk away from the  hustle and bustle of the city. We've raised 4 kids , a load of English setters  and had a whole lotta fun doing it. Still are!
